The hotel TV is no longer just a screen for entertainment. It is becoming an interactive gateway to communication, services and a more connected guest experience.

Entertainment is still at the heart of the experience. The role of the hotel TV is changing, but its original purpose remains as important as ever. After a long day of travel, meetings or sightseeing, guests still want to return to their room, switch off and relax. Live TV, movies, series, music and streaming platforms remain essential parts of the in-room experience.

What has changed is the way these features are delivered. With OTT services, native Chromecast and AirPlay, guests can access their favourite content and continue the digital habits they have at home, without having to learn a new system. The hotel TV becomes familiar, personal and effortless, almost like a companion waiting in the room.

For hospitality, this is an important distinction: the future of hotel TV is not about replacing entertainment with technology. It is about using technology to make entertainment feel more natural, more personal and more connected to the guest.

From entertainment to communication: the screen as part of the hotel

The same screen that delivers a movie can also become one of the hotel’s most effective communication channels. A welcome message, breakfast times, restaurant information, spa services, local recommendations or important notifications can all reach the guest directly in the privacy of their room.

With a connected IPTV platform, content can be managed centrally while remaining flexible enough to adapt to different properties, languages, rooms or guest profiles. This creates a new opportunity for hotels: communication no longer has to be generic or limited to the front desk. It can be relevant, timely and contextual.

Instead of simply displaying information, the hotel TV can become a digital window into everything the hotel has to offer, helping guests discover services and experiences while making the stay easier to navigate. This is where the connection between the in-room TV and the hotel’s wider digital ecosystem becomes essential, including PMS integration and centralized content management.

From communication to interaction: a digital concierge in the room

The next evolution is the ability to interact. Guests are increasingly comfortable using digital interfaces to find answers, request services and solve everyday problems. The hotel TV can become a natural point of access: What time does breakfast start? How do I connect my phone? Can I book a massage? Where is the gym? Can I order room service? Integrations with PMS and other hotel systems make it possible to move beyond static information towards a more dynamic experience.

WebApps and connected guest services can extend this interaction beyond the TV itself, allowing guests to move naturally between the screen, their smartphone and the hotel’s digital services. Artificial intelligence can take this evolution even further, allowing guests to interact with hotel services in a more conversational and intuitive way.

The real value of AI, however, is not simply adding a chatbot to the TV. It is reducing friction. When technology can answer a question, guide a guest to the right service or resolve a simple issue without unnecessary steps, it improves the experience for both sides: guests receive immediate assistance, while hotel teams can concentrate on the moments where personal interaction makes the greatest difference.

One guest, many devices: the rise of the connected in-room experience

Today’s guest does not experience technology one device at a time. A smartphone, the hotel TV, a web app, a QR code and hotel services can all be part of the same journey. The challenge for hospitality is making these different touchpoints feel like one coherent experience.

This is where technologies such as Chromecast, AirPlay, WebApp, PMS integration and cloud-based management become more than individual features: they become components of a connected ecosystem. The guest should not need to know which system is running behind the screen. They should simply be able to move naturally from one interaction to another, from their phone to the TV, from the TV to a hotel service, and from a digital request back to the hotel team.

For multi-property groups, centralized cloud management also makes it possible to maintain consistency across locations while giving each property the flexibility to adapt its content and services. The technology becomes increasingly sophisticated behind the scenes, while the guest experience becomes increasingly simple.

The hotel TV of 2027: more useful, more personal, more human

By 2027, the most successful hotel TV will not necessarily be the one with the longest list of features. It will be the one that understands its role within the entire guest journey. It will still be there when guests want to relax with their favourite show. But it will also be ready when they need information, want to contact the hotel, discover a service, solve a problem or simply find out what to do next.

This is the direction DirectStreams is pursuing with its vision of turning every screen into a guest experience: not another device competing for the guest’s attention, but an intuitive interface connecting entertainment, communication, hotel services and personal digital habits.

The best technology is ultimately the technology guests do not have to think about. It works quietly in the background, making the stay more comfortable, more connected and more personal, while leaving the human side of hospitality exactly where it belongs: at the centre of the experience.
